1951 Ford F1: Video #28 -- Changing out the break-in oil
The '51 Ford truck is at least 150 miles down the road since the engine rebuild, so that means it's time to change out the break-in oil.
I've never done an oil change on the truck so ride along as we learn some new things -- like the best way to get the leftover oil out of the topside filter canister on these old rigs.

1951 Ford F1: Video #27 -- Father's Day Car Show
Просмотров 30614 дней назад
The Father's Day Car Show at Forest Park in Noblesville is one of the biggest and best in the greater Indianapolis area, regularly bringing in hundreds of vehicles. I like it because it's a nice range from show cars to ratrods to survivors to modern curios. I'd never entered a vehicle before, but we got the '51 Ford truck cleaned and oiled up to show off. Had a great deal of fun playing lookey-...

After two lengthy stays at the shop for an engine rebuild and bunch of other stuff, the '51 Ford is ready to spend the summer and fall cruising! That means it's time for a wash and reapplication of the boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits protective coating, aka homemade "patina juice." This stuff really brings out the deep, rich color of the natural patina, as well as giving it a little shin...
1951 Ford F1: Video #25 -- A very special car show

I'd just gotten back from a long business trip and was very tired, and honestly didn't want to go to a car show this weekend but I'm glad I did. This one wasn't huge, probably only a couple dozen vehicles at its peak, but it was held for an older gentleman at a hospice center in Indianapolis celebrating his birthday. He was an old car nut back in the day, but is largely confined to the center. ...
1951 Ford F1: Video #24 -- Wiring harness, new carb and fuel pump
Просмотров 726Месяц назад
If you've been wondering why there hasn't been any F1 videos lately, that's because soon after coming home for the engine rebuild it began to have random stalling issues. After much exploration, we decided to put an electric fuel pump on to supplement the mechanical one. While we were at it we put on a new carburetor, too. It was also determined that the original wiring harness had to go. That ...

It was 25 degrees and snowy this weekend in Indiana, then on Sunday the sun decided to come out and warm us up a bit. Good time to do some puttering with the '51 Ford truck. I was worried the right rear turn signal had some bad wiring, since the taillight worked but not the signal. After a bit of poking and a rummage through my stash of auto light bulbs, the light of serendipity shone again. Al...

Got the truck back from the shop today after the rebuild of the 239 flathead V-8. Wound up needing some other things as you might expect of a 73-year-old vehicle. New radiator, alternator, clutch pressure plate, a bunch of tubes, hoses and wires. We also serviced the transmission and it was a good thing as the fluid was low and very old. It was a bit more than I was hoping to spend but it runs ...

It was decked and dipped had to be dipped twice, they said, owing to the buildup of sludge and debris. I owned one of these in the mid 70's. Flathead V-8s were going for a song, I picked mine up for $300. Originally green, someone had brush painted it white. A piece of plywood covered the trashed bed. Almost always started out in 2nd, 1st gear would have been great for pulling things. All the luck in the world with yours.

I recently discovered your series so am currently rationing myself to one or two videos only per week. I had to laugh at your comment about how small your garage is, mine can barely fit my ride-on lawn mower and my Triumph Speed triple, there's no way my Range Rover classic would fit! Many thanks for the video and I'm looking forward to catching up! Cheers!

Get a combustion leak detector to test for a blown head gasket. These d17 engines are prone to blown head gaskets. Which would explain the overheating and low coolant level in the radiator. I know you said the engine didn’t seem hot, but with an aluminum head, once it gets hot the head warps and is not longer flat, further exacerbating the head gasket problem. If the head is warped you’ll have to get it remachined within Honda spec or buy a remanufactured one. Ask me how i know all of this lol. it can all be done in a weekend so long has a you have good mechanical knowhow, patience, and remain vigilant with things like the timing. If you go down this road it’s worth while to do a water pump and timing belt since that is a “major” maintenance item on higher mileage Hondas. Best of luck!
